A Legacy of Healing, Harmony, and Hope

Behind a strip mall on Crenshaw Boulevard near South Los Angeles, a young girl named Cinna Toy Wohlmuth discovered the strength of community, the pain of injustice, and a deep yearning to make a difference. Raised by immigrant parents, she recalls, “I thought my life was like everyone else’s, until I saw how different it truly was.” That moment of awakening came during the civil rights-era Los Angeles riots. “Even as a child, I knew something was wrong with the way my neighbors were being treated. I did not know how, but I knew I wanted to help.”

Decades later, Cinna Toy Wohlmuth, MD, is still answering that call.

Today, Dr. Wohlmuth is more than a physician. She is a mentor, an educator, a builder of systems rooted in compassion, and a fierce advocate for equity in women’s health. After earning her medical degree from Loma Linda University, drawn by its mission “to make man whole: physical, mental, spiritual,” she chose obstetrics and gynecology not just for its science, but for its soul. “It was the first rotation I had in medical school, and I never looked back. OB/GYN is where I saw the deepest connection between healing and humanity.”

That connection was especially powerful at Adventist Health White Memorial, where her clinical training began and where she has remained ever since. “White Memorial is my family. Here, we share a mission: to serve, to respect, to uplift. We meet people where they are, without judgment, with cultural humility, and we care deeply.”

One story stays with her always. Early in her career, she saved the life of a teenage mother by performing an emergency hysterectomy. While medically necessary, the surgery haunted her, knowing it might affect the young woman’s future, her self-worth, her ability to be seen and loved. Sixteen years later, the young mother returned with her daughter and her husband to say thank you. “She introduced me to her family,” Dr. Wohlmuth recalls in reflective gratitude. “And I knew, finally, that she had the life she deserved.”

As the immediate past Program Director of Adventist Health White Memorial’s OB/GYN medical residency program and now OB/GYN generalist faculty, Dr. Wohlmuth continues to dedicate herself to mentoring the next generation of physicians. Her vision is to pass on the principles that shaped her: excellence, integrity, and advocacy for those most in need. “We train our residents not just in medicine, but in mission. We are not just building doctors, we’re building changemakers.”

But training compassionate, skilled physicians takes more than passion. It takes support.

“Our community deserves the best,” she says. “Not just good care but excellent care. And that means investing in simulation training, updated surgical equipment, behavioral health services, and most importantly, people — faculty and residents — who believe in the mission. That’s where philanthropy comes in.”

Dr. Wohlmuth knows that giving is about trust. “When someone donates to our work, they’re saying, ‘I believe in you. I trust you to make a difference.’ And we honor that by delivering real, tangible, lasting impact.”

Beyond the hospital walls, Dr. Wohlmuth’s spirit is equally vibrant. A lifelong lover of music, she finds joy in harmonizing with family, friends, and faith communities. “Music is another way I connect with people, with meaning. It’s always been there for me, and it reminds me that healing, too, is about harmony.”

As she steps into a new role, shaping the future of medicine while remaining rooted in service, Dr. Wohlmuth inspires us to act. In her own words, “Excellence is never easy, but it’s always worth it.”
