Leading With Heart and Compassion
Elizabeth Martinez’s Mission of Hope at Adventist Health White Memorial

Elizabeth Martinez has never forgotten where she comes from. Raised in El Monte by her mother — a widow with six children who taught them the value of hard work and compassion — Elizabeth grew up surrounded by humble beginnings, but also by a powerful legacy of resilience and generosity. “My mother was always very giving,” she recalls. “She preached the importance of working hard, doing good, and giving back. That’s the legacy I want to leave behind.”
Today, Elizabeth is living that legacy as the new chair of the Adventist Health White Memorial Charitable Foundation board at Adventist Health White Memorial. A proud Latina leader and Senior Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at Meruelo Enterprises, she has built her career on relationships, community service, and a steadfast belief in the power of philanthropy to transform lives.
Her journey to White Memorial began with a simple tour. “When I walked through the hospital and saw the neonatal unit, the tiny babies receiving such incredible care — it touched my heart,” she says. “I realized White Memorial wasn’t just a hospital. It was a beacon for the community, addressing food insecurity, diabetes prevention, mental health, and so much more. I knew I had to be part of this mission.”
Being a Mission Owner
Stepping into the role of board chair, Elizabeth is deeply aware of the responsibility. “It’s an honor, but also a call to action,” she explains. “I want to lead with compassion and with intention. At the end of the day, it’s about raising funds to make sure these vital services continue, especially now when so many programs are at risk of being cut. We need to raise the bar.”
Elizabeth’s passion for access to care runs deep. From advocating for nutrition education and mobile health clinics to prioritizing mental health resources, her focus is clear: breaking barriers for underserved communities. “I grew up seeing how healthcare wasn’t always accessible,” she says. “People put work before their health because they couldn’t afford otherwise. That has to change.”
Her leadership style is shaped by both humility and determination. “To me, success isn’t about titles or money,” she reflects. “It’s about being a servant leader — having a good heart, helping others, and giving back in any way you can.”
Being Brilliant as a Latina Leader
As one of the youngest Latina leaders to chair the foundation board, Elizabeth embodies the spirit of hope and possibility for the next generation. She sees her role not only as a fundraiser and advocate but also as a connector. “I believe in the power of partnerships,” she says. “Whether it’s through businesses, media, or community leaders, we can amplify our impact when we work together.”
And she has a message for those who may not yet know the work of Adventist Health White Memorial: “Come see it for yourself. Walk through the halls, meet the people, and witness the programs. Once you do, you’ll believe in this mission too. Because White Memorial isn’t just saving lives — it’s transforming communities.”
