Montebello Volunteer Ambassador Lillian Gaitan
At 86, Lillian Gaitan still walks so fast that hospital visitors often struggle to keep up. She credits her energy to her daily treadmill routine but even more so to the purpose she has found in volunteering.
“People tell me I walk fast,” Gaitan said with a laugh. “I think it’s because I never stopped moving.”
For 22 years, Gaitan has greeted patients and visitors at Adventist Health White Memorial Montebello (formerly Beverly Hospital), offering directions, assistance and, most importantly, kindness. Her journey as a Volunteer Ambassador began in 2003, just weeks after she retired from the Montebello Unified School District. Encouraged by her friend Rosemary Orozco, she became a volunteer and has never looked back.
“I wanted to be out front, talking to people,” Gaitan said. “Because usually if you’re coming to a hospital, it’s because somebody’s ill there. I’m trying to make them feel comfortable.”
Over the years, Gaitan has seen how much a simple act of kindness can mean. She remembers an instance when a man, frustrated while trying to navigate his way to visit someone important, snapped at her. A few hours later, he returned to apologize, saying, ‘I’m sorry. I was really stressed. I’m sorry I acted that way.’
That moment has stayed with her, reminding her why she remains committed to serving others.
Volunteers like Gaitan do more than provide directions. They create a sense of warmth in a place that can feel overwhelming. “We are the first people visitors see,” she said. “If we can make their experience even a little easier, then we’ve done something good.”
Gaitan has also witnessed how volunteerism has slowed over the years. Today, the numbers have dwindled. “We need more people,” Gaitan said. “I always tell those who are interested, ‘Come meet me. I’ll show you what we do.’”
For donors, Gaitan’s story highlights the importance of generosity. Every dollar contributed supports the programs and spaces volunteers like her bring to life. “This hospital is a blessing to so many,” Gaitan said proudly. “I love volunteering. It makes me happy. And, you know, in life, you should do things that make you happy.”
Gaitan has no plans to slow down. She stated, “I will soon be 87 years old and hope to continue this commitment for as long as God will give me good health to continue.”
Lillian Gaitan’s story beautifully illustrates the difference you can make through service. Our wonderful Volunteer Ambassadors work hard to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere in the hospital. They support patients and families during tough moments and ensure they have access to compassionate care. We are grateful for the efforts of caring individuals who step forward to help.
