Healing Roots John Found Purpose in Our Community Garden

John, a longtime resident of the neighborhood, has weathered many seasons of life. But when he walks through the garden gates, he says something remarkable happens: “It’s therapeutic. My stress melts away. I lose myself in the rhythm of planting, digging, and caring for the soil. I walk out exhausted, but happy. This is the best gym I could ever be in.”
For John, the garden is more than a volunteer activity — it’s a lifeline. He and his daughter first came to the Community Resource Center through art therapy. Soon after, they found themselves immersed in the work of the garden. Together, they rake leaves, pull weeds, feed the chickens, and even capture the beauty of each harvest through photography.
“I’ve even got my daughter involved in coming to the garden. For her, it’s a healing experience. She sleeps better when she spends time here. For me, it’s a win-win; I give my time, but I get even more in return,” John shares.
The Community Garden is a cornerstone of the foundation’s Food as Medicine initiative, which promotes wellness in three vital ways:
- Growing nearly two tons of fresh produce annually, ensuring families have access to nutritious, organic food.
- Hosting a weekly farmers market, connecting neighbors with local farmers and affordable produce.
- Operating a food pantry, supporting those experiencing food insecurity with essential staples.
In a community disproportionately impacted by diabetes, obesity, and limited access to fresh food, these programs are critical. John has witnessed the impact firsthand: “I see kids struggling with obesity and neighbors battling diabetes. This garden brings health, hope, and real food right where it’s needed most.”
And yet, the garden is only as strong as the community behind it. Volunteers and supporters keep the soil turned, the seeds planted, and the harvest shared. John’s invitation is heartfelt and direct: “Please come and experience the garden. Even if it’s just one day, you’ll leave with something powerful, healing in body, mind, and spirit. You won’t be disappointed.”
The Community Garden and Community Resource Center thrive because of people like John. And you too, can make a difference, just like John and his daughter by getting involved.
