Carmen's Story The Gift of Health

Jose Duran and Carmen Hernandez

“White Memorial gave me my life back,” says Carmen Hernandez, her eyes bright with gratitude. “They didn’t just heal me—they taught me how to care for myself and believe in myself again.”

A few years ago, Carmen faced a series of health challenges, including diabetes, painful injuries, and significant vision loss. But through the Diabetes Program and the Community Resource Center (CRC) at Adventist Health White Memorial, she found more than just medical care — she found a family.

With encouragement from her health coach and Diabetes Educator, Jose, and her ¡Vive Bien! Progam classmates at the CRC, Carmen began to transform her life through better nutrition, gentle movement, and a renewed belief in herself.

“We move, we laugh, we support each other,” she says. “When you walk into the CRC, you feel hope.”

Today, Carmen celebrates each small victory with joy and purpose. Despite her blindness, she empowers others in her community by sharing her story, her strength, and her resilience.

“If someone feels stuck, I tell them: Go to White Memorial. You’ll find hope, guidance, and people who care.”

Carmen’s story is a powerful reminder that when we invest in wellness, we invest in people — their health, their confidence, and their future.
